About heartKIDS SA

Our Story
Where it all began

Who Are We?

In late 2014, a young mother lost her newborn son after a courageous 27-day fight for his life. During those days, her tireless search for answers about CHD revealed a painful truth: beyond an existing CHD WhatsApp group, our country did not have a platform to bring the greater awareness, early detection, and access to care - that may well have made his journey very different.

From this loss, the concept and dream of heartKIDS SA was founded - to honour a life cut too short and to advocate for the one in every hundred children born with CHD. Nearly ten years on, our purpose remains unchanged—to raise awareness, educate communities, and be a place of comfort, and support for families navigating CHD.

Advocacy

We raise awareness of CHD, promote early detection, and advocate for improved access to diagnosis, treatment, and care. Through education and engagement with public and private institutions, we give a voice to affected children and families.

Support

We walk the journey with families living with congenital heart disease, providing emotional, practical, and, where possible, financial support. From diagnosis through treatment and beyond, we ensure no family faces CHD alone.

Fundraising

We raise essential funds through events, partnerships, and donations to sustain our work. Fundraising enables us to deliver support services, raise awareness, and continue advocating for better outcomes for children with CHD.
