An Unexpected Diagnosis
Riley entered the world on Friday, 13 March, delivered via C-section and weighing a healthy 3.7kg. His pregnancy had been smooth, with no signs that anything was wrong. In those first precious hours after birth, however, his parents noticed he struggled while trying to breastfeed, battling what seemed like a blocked nose.
Nurses soon picked up something more concerning — Riley was breathing rapidly. Further tests revealed the unimaginable: Riley had four congenital heart defects. What began as a “normal” birth quickly turned into days filled with fear and unanswered questions. After 10 days in the NICU, Riley was discharged, but his journey was only just beginning. His weight gain was slow, and his growth closely monitored. At just three months old, Riley’s parents were told their baby needed urgent open-heart surgery. In the heart of winter, they packed their bags and travelled to Christiaan Barnard Hospital, placing their trust in Dr Pribut and Dr Vosloo.
What began as an ordinary birth quickly became a journey of courage, uncertainty, and hope — a reminder that congenital heart defects can touch any family, without warning.
A Tiny Heart, a Mighty Fighter

Riley’s surgery was carefully planned, but just as hope was in sight, pneumonia delayed the operation. He spent another anxious week in hospital, growing stronger under constant medical care while his parents waited and worried. Finally, on 23 June 2015, Riley was strong enough to face his biggest battle..
That day, Riley underwent his first — and only — open-heart surgery. For nine long hours, his parents waited, holding onto hope while a dedicated surgical team worked tirelessly to repair his heart. When they were finally able to see him again, they were met with both relief and the reality of how much he had endured. Despite multiple complications, Dr Vosloo was able to confirm what they had prayed for — the surgery had been a success.
Riley now lives with a permanent pacemaker, a small device that plays a vital role in supporting his heart every day. It was replaced in June 2021, marking yet another milestone in his journey. While Riley experienced delays in his development along the way, his resilience has always shone through.
Today, Riley is a bright, curious, and intelligent seven-year-old who continues to surprise everyone around him. Recently diagnosed with autism, he approaches life with determination, personality, and an unshakable spirit. To his family, and to the entire HeartKids community, Riley is proof that even the tiniest hearts can show the greatest strength — a true superhero in every sense ❤️
